Why Living Alone Is Such An Advantage In Life
Just about a month ago, I was moving into my new solo apartment--my first one ever. All by myself...no housemate, no roommate, nadaaaa. Every square feet to myself...and I'm not gonna lie, I was waiting for this day for a LONGGGG TIME (especially after dealing with a lot roommate hassles). One of the biggest questions I get asked about living alone is whether I feel lonely or if I ever become lonely at certain times. And to be honest, I think that is one of the top reasons, if not the top reason, on why people don't live alone (or do anything by themselves for that matter). *You learn how to do everything for yourself -- obviously when you're living alone, no one is there to babysit your mess. You make a mess, you best bet that you'll be cleaning up that mess or you're dealing with a very messy home environment. You don't have a roommate or mom to clean it for you and I think that's the beauty of it. Yes, take the damn trash out. Living alone helps you become a mature adult quicker.*You get comfortable with being alone -- as humans, we naturally like interaction with others or having that safety net of having someone around us. This somehow helps fill the void of emptiness or fear of loneliness, in which, we just self-impose on ourselves...whether you like it or not. Being alone is not a scary thing and the sooner you tell yourself that, the better off you'll be in this brutal world (sorry, kinda like a man for himself type world if ya ask me). I genuinely believe that a difficult challenge for a lot of humans is simply being alone--both physically and mentally. It's true, that a lot of individuals can't sit alone with their thoughts. But that's why there's this thing called meditation that is actually really useful to keeping yourself more calm internally aka just being a more self-aware and mindful person. When you realize you can live alone, you also conquer half your fears that involve doing anything by yourself. Basically, you can really do more in life now. And I'm not even joking.*You adapt to the independent life much better -- being independent is amazing. Honestly, it's actually fucking fantastic. You don't need to depend on others and your life isn't contingent on what other people say, think, feel, do, and etc. You become more in control of how you go about your life because from the moment you wake up and get out of bed, it's all you. Not waking up to your mom telling you to get up and not waking up to small talk with your housemate when you really don't want to be bothered in the morning. Just you vs. the day.*It teaches you how to be smarter about your finances -- living alone is not cheap either, especially if you live in big cities like Los Angeles or New York City. On average, an above average looking one bedroom apartment costs at least $2,000 in LA and probably close to double that in NYC. So, if you are financially independent (which you probably are for the most part if you're living on your own), then you have to figure out ways to make sure you can 100% pay the rent and utilities at the beginning of each month without sweating too much. Aka less mindless spending on Starbucks, unnecessary clothes and items, and etc. All the small things that you pay for right now because you live at home or 1-3 other roommates that make rent cheaper will add up and can/will contribute to paying some portion of rent and utilities when you live on your own. Those are some of my thoughts on the advantages on living alone and different aspects in life it forces you to grow in. Let me know your thoughts on this and whether you'd want to live by yourself in the future xx
